Canadian Neurogastroenterology Network (CNN)

Overview:

Disorders of GI motor and/or sensory function comprise a substantial portion of a Gastroenterologist’s practice, yet remain poorly understood and therefore sub optimally managed. Canada has a very strong track record in the field of Neurogastroenterology and Motility, both at the basic science and clinical level, but only recently have we begun to take full advantage of this expertise through the establishment of the Canadian Neurogastroenterology Network(CNN). This preliminary network proved useful in supporting the Irritable Bowel Syndrome component of the successful “IMAGINE” SPOR application led by Dr. Paul Moayyedi. By further developing the CNN under the auspices of CAG, we hope to advance both research and education in the field of Neurogastroenterology and Motility in Canada. Specifically, our aims are to:

  1. Facilitate clinical research in Neurogastroenterology and Motility
  2. Develop educational programs for health professionals in Neurogastroenterology and Motility.
  3. Develop patient care pathways for selected motility and sensory gut disorders.
  4. Advise GI program directors on curricula and entrustable professional activities (“EPAs”) for Gastroenterology clinical fellows as it relates to Neurogastroenterology and Motility disorders.
  5. Advise the CAG on issues related to clinical practice, education and research needs in the field of Neurogastroenterology and Motility.
  6. Provide a forum for advising colleagues on patient management issues in this field.

Although the group has liaised via teleconference informally, a formal organizational structure has not yet been developed. In the next year the CNN special interest group plans to elect an executive, develop criteria for membership and expand membership accordingly, formalize educational programs geared toGI fellows, and pilot a patient care pathway in one or more of the relevant disorders.
