Job Description / Duties

The McGill University Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

Prospective candidates will have a proven academic track-record in basic and/or clinical research.

The MUHC Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is highly committed to excellence in clinical care and innovation, research, and medical education. The Division has a rich history of clinical and research excellence and an international profile in many areas. These include inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with a dedicated IBD Center, hepatology, liver transplantation, and advanced therapeutic endoscopic and endoscopic ultrasound procedures in pancreatico-biliary diseases.

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is one of fifteen divisions within the Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. In addition to playing an important clinical role in the Department, division members have excellent opportunities for collaborative educational and research endeavors with protected time for scholarly activities to ensure rewarding, fulfilling career development.

Job Duties

The incumbent will be the Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Within the MUHC, the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology spans the Glen site (Royal Victoria Hospital), the Montreal General Hospital, and Hôpital Lachine.

The successful candidate will be a transformational leader who, as Director of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Division, will take one of our high performing Divisions to the next level of academic excellence and draw on strong interpersonal skills to inspire best practices and innovation. The successful candidate will bring a track-record of success in academic leadership with the ability to foster excellence in teaching, patient care, and research within the Division. They will be a unifying force strengthening site specific activities and cross-site collaboration.

The successful candidate will provide leadership for the clinical and educational missions of the Division and Department, promote independent and collaborative research and fulfill administrative responsibilities at the institutional, university, regional and provincial levels, where appropriate.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications / Required Skills

Candidates must:

  • Hold an MD degree, and hold or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec;

  • Have completed subspecialty training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology;

  • Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);

  • Hold certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec;  

  • Possess relevant leadership experience;

  • Demonstrate internationally-recognized academic accomplishment in Gastroenterology and Hepatology research and teaching;

  • Have clinical expertise suited to tertiary hospital settings;

  • Have experience in an administrative role;

  • Have experience in training students, residents, and fellows in clinical settings;

  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
