Summer Studentship Awards

The Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) is pleased to make available ten 2019 Summer Studentship Scholarships at $6,000 each. These scholarships are designed to provide short-term financial support for undergraduates who wish to obtain introductory training in research in the field of Gastroenterology.

Ivan Beck Memorial Summer Studentship Award

The CAG and the CDHF are honoured to support the Ivan Beck Memorial Summer Studentship Award. The top ranked applicant will be awarded the Ivan Beck Memorial Summer Studentship Award which includes an additional stipend of $1,000. This award is in recognition of Dr. Ivan Beck, one of the founding members of the CAG (1962) and the CDHF (1995). Learn more about Ivan Beck.

Terms

The award of $6,000 is to be used entirely for the student's salary. The top ranked applicant will be awarded the Ivan Beck Memorial Summer Studentship Award which includes $1,000 in addition to the above stipend.

It is anticipated that the supervisor/institution will supplement the award as deemed appropriate.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The successful candidate will be expected to work full time on a research project under the supervision of a qualified investigator for 4 months (May-August)
  • The proposed supervisor must be a regular CAG member (not trainee), in good standing for at least three years at the time of submission of the application. The supervisor must maintain CAG membership during the term of the award.
  • Only one application, if deemed fundable, will be awarded per supervisor/laboratory.
  • The applicant must be enrolled in an undergraduate program or related programs (e.g. nursing, dentistry) in a Canadian Institution. Applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree, or will graduate before undertaking, or during this award, are not eligible.
  • The applicant may be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or foreign citizen.
  • The applicant may only hold this award once.

 

Application Process

Step One: Application Submission - Deadline is January 31 11:59 PM ET

Candidates are required to submit an online application.

Submission Requirements

PLEASE NOTE that you must submit the online application form INCLUDING uploading of all required documents (in .pdf format), in one single step; you are not able to save your application and return to it at a future date, rather it must be completed all at one time.

The supervisor will need to:
a. provide the required documentation, outlined below, for upload
b. verify, by initialing and dating each page, the authenticity of the trainees transcripts
c. verify, by initialing and dating each page, the authenticity of any letters of support

During your completion of the online application you will be asked to upload required documentation; you must have these PDF documents prepared, finalized, and ready to upload when you begin the online application.
1. copies of transcripts, initialed and dated on each page by your supervisor, from your ongoing degree as well as your most recently completed degree, if applicable.
2. a summary (maximum 1 page) of your research related experience including a list of references/publications
3. a research proposal (maximum 2 pages) provided by your supervisor
4. a list of your supervisor's research funding details
5. a list of your supervisor's experience (i.e. trainees and their details)
6. a list of your supervisor's publications
7. any letter(s) of support (optional, multiple letters must be combined into one single file)

Upon successful submission you will be directed to a webpage that confirms the successful submission and within a short period of time you will receive an email from the CAG National Office confirming receipt of your submission. If this does not occur, please contact the CAG National Office immediately.

Submit Application

Step Two: Review

The applications will be reviewed and ranked by CAG Research Affairs. Winners will be notified by mid-April. Funding will be provided during May.

Step Three: Approval

The award will be made on the basis of suitability and excellence in the following order:

  • The environment where the research is to be carried out.
  • The research proposal, with emphasis on the applicant’s role in an ongoing project illustrating how the project provides an introduction to research in the broad field of gastroenterology.
  • The applicant, based on previous scholastic records.

Under normal circumstances only one applicant, per laboratory, will be funded.

Step Four: Post-Program Submission

A short summary (1-2 pages) of your work, including results and a list of any publications (abstracts, papers, and presentations) must be submitted no later than one month after completion of the award term.
