What's New > CAG Trainee Programs Cancelled for 2027
The CAG Board of Directors has made the difficult decision that three CAG trainee programs will not proceed in 2027:
-
Gastroenterology-Residents-in-Training (GRIT) Course
-
Research Topics in Digestive Diseases Meeting
-
Scholars’ Program
This decision was not made lightly. CAG recognizes the important role these programs play in supporting trainees and providing opportunities for education, mentorship, networking and professional development. We understand that these programs are highly valued by trainees and faculty, and we recognize that this news will be disappointing to members of our community.
A difficult decision based on financial sustainability
The decision reflects the financial realities facing CAG. The cost of supporting each trainee is approximately $2,000, with more than 130 trainees participating across the three programs. Together, these programs represent an annual investment of more than $250,000.
At this time, CAG cannot sustainably maintain this level of financial commitment while also ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of the organization.
Continuing to support trainees
While these programs will not proceed in 2027, CAG remains committed to supporting trainees and investing in the next generation of Canadian gastroenterologists.
The CDDW Implementation Committee will continue to explore opportunities to foster trainee and faculty connections during CDDW 2027 in Vancouver. Trainee-focused sessions within the CDDW 2027 program, including the Post-Graduate Courses, remain unchanged.
Trainees who have submitted, or are planning to submit, an abstract will still be considered for the core CDDW program. We strongly encourage residents and trainees to submit their work and take advantage of the opportunity to share their research with colleagues from across Canada at CDDW.
CAG appreciates the contributions of the trainees, faculty and volunteers who have supported these programs and helped make them valuable parts of the CAG community. We remain committed to finding meaningful ways to support trainee education, research, mentorship and connection through CDDW and other CAG initiatives.
We welcome your questions, feedback, and suggestions at membership@cag-acg.org, as we look for meaningful ways to continue supporting trainees.
