POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW- FACULTY TRANSITION AWARD

The Canadian Association of Gastroenterology in partnership with the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC) and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) invites applications for the Post-Doctoral Fellow – Faculty Transition Award.

Purpose: 

  • To provide junior faculty positions (Assistant Professors) in IBD research
  • To attract and retain talented postdoctoral fellows and afford them the opportunity to launch their academic careers.

Eligibility:

  • Previous, or current, Post-Doctoral to Faculty Transition Awardees are not eligible.
  • Applicants holding a Ph.D. may have a maximum of five (5) years post-doctoral training at the time of submitting their application. Applicants can apply in the last year of the Post-Doctoral Fellowship (MD/PhD) or within the first 24 months of their first faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor Level.
  • Applicant must have a letter from their Institution outlining the offer of a faculty position or that the applicant has been appointed to faculty and the start date of that appointment.
  • Individuals holding an MD degree must have a minimum of 2-3 years of postdoctoral research training and suitability will be gauged based on their training records.
  • Awards can only be held at a recognized Canadian University or Research Institution
  • Other eligibility criteria can be found on the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology official website at www.cag-acg.org and are also available with the application forms and guidelines for submission.
  • Applications must focus their research on an area relevant to IBD and will be judged based on the work as addressing the mission of the CCFC to find a cure for IBD (www.ccfc.ca).

Terms of the Award:

  • This award is for up to four (4) years.
  • The stipend will be $70,000/annum (additional salary support and associated benefits should be in line with the supporting institution’s salary scale and can be negotiated at the discretion of the applicant and Departmental Chair and such negotiations are not considered part of this award).
  • A research allowance of up to $40,000/annum will be provided based on the review of a budget submitted by the applicant.
  • A progress report must be submitted no later than 22 months of initiating the award (and no earlier than 18 months). A satisfactory review of this report is required for funding for years 3 and 4 of this award.  Also at this time, a budgetary statement must be submitted justifying the need for the research allowance. (As a guideline, the progress report should show that a laboratory program has been established with hiring of personnel/trainees, preliminary data, published abstracts, additional awards received, grant support, publications and any other information which the successful applicant wishes to supply.)
  • The CCFC must be acknowledged in all publications that arise from this support.
  • An annual report will be required at the end of year 3 and year 4. Failure to supply a satisfactory report may lead to termination of the award and forfeit of final payments.

Applications are made using the appropriate forms on the CAG website (www.cag-acg.org) and must contain a detailed 5 page research plan.  Ten (10) copies must be forwarded to the CAG National Office. The deadline for completed applications to be received is October 15th.

Applications will be reviewed by the CAG Research Committee in collaboration with the CIHR. 

One (1) award will be given, to start July 1st in the year following the application deadline.
