New Investigator Establishment Grants

The CAG, CIHR, and Nycomed are proud to announce the, NEW INVESTIGATOR ESTABLISHMENT GRANT in Gastroenterology.  These grants are designed to provide New Investigators an opportunity to initiate independent research programs.  These grants are made possible by a partnership between the CAG, Nycomed and the sponsoring institution and the CIHR Rx D. The total value of each grant will be a maximum of $60,000, consisting of $20,000 from the CAG (whose funding derives largely from Rx & D member companies), $20,000 from the sponsoring institution and funding from the CIHR Rx & D upon successful peer-review of the grant application by the CIHR.  Each grant is for two (2) years and is not renewable.  The deadline for application is October 15.  Funding will start July 1st of the year for following applications. Pre-registration or a letter of intent to the CIHR is not required for this application.

Research applications will ONLY be considered from a CAG Regular Member or an investigator who has been approved for Provisional CAG Regular Member status.  Application for CAG Regular Membership must be submitted to the CAG National Office no later than July 1st for those submitting a research application for the October 15th deadline.

The grants are open to any New Investigator with a Full-Time Faculty position at a Canadian University, Hospital or affiliated Research Institute.  A New Investigator is defined as a person who has held a Full-Time Faculty position for less than 24 months at the time of application for the grant.  Persons currently applying for Faculty Positions may apply for these grants provided evidence of salary support is submitted to the CAG on or before the start date of a successful application.

Applicants holding "Adjunct" or "Research Professor" appointment at a University are eligible to apply for these grants. However, the CAG reserves the right to make enquiries at the applicants institution and elsewhere in order to determine the extent to which the applicant functions as an independent researcher. In general, applicants holding appointments of this type and who cannot prove research independence will be considered as a lower priority for funding than applicants holding full university appointments.

There are no restrictions as to the type of research that may be supported as long as it falls in the broad definition of Gastroenterology.  The areas of research may be clinical or basic science, or any other forms of health research related to Gastroenterology.  Any applications deemed ineligible will be returned without further review.  Full peer-review of all eligible applications will be performed by the CAG Research Committee in conjunction with the CIHR.

The grant may be used to pay the salary of research staff (technicians, research assistants [including nurses] and trainees), but not the applicant.  It may also be used for the purchase of equipment and supplies to conduct the research project,  for travel (to a maximum of $1,500) and publication costs.   Budgets must be fully justified.  Inadequate justification may render an application ineligible for review.

In all cases the sponsoring institution must agree to match the value of the grant made by the CAG (up to $20,000).  No exceptions to this regulation will be made.
